Noise pollution charts rail traffic
The European Environmental Noise Directive 2002/49/EC obliges national authorities to draw up strategic noise maps and action plans. These noise maps are intended to inform the public about the status in their specific living environment. They also serve as a basis for noise action plans to improve the situation at the main bottlenecks.
In 2007 these noise maps were drawn up for the first time, and then every five years later. Strategic noise maps were calculated for all railways on Flemish territory that fall under phase 1 of the directive (> 60,000 passages / year). This includes the calculation and reporting of the derived data (noise contours Lden and Lnight, area, number of noise-sensitive destinations, exposed persons within the contours, etc.).
A fully operational software was developed, including software for developing and creating action plans and any future required maps and associated data. The output data are suitable for use in a GIS environment.
Role in the project: project management, GIS-analysis and final report.
